Posts. 1,214. I have found h-4831 to be a smokeless powder replacement for black powder. It gives black powder velocities with very low pressure. Reloader 7 for the heavier hunting loads and Unique for the fun loads that anyone can shoot. The factory loads with same bullet show 2,050 FPS also. This is one (1) grain below their listed MAXIMUM loading but shoots identically to the factory ...I found this information in the Hodgdon manual for Benchmark and the 45-70 (they list a Benchmark load for a 350 grain Hornady JRN bullet 56.0 - 60.0C, for a 405 grain Speer JFP bullet they list 55.0 - 58.5C). I really like the idea of a compressed load for this cartridge. With Varget, I get a mildly compressed load at 58.0 grains.
Even IMR 4320 is to slow for optimal loads, particularly with barrels 26" or shorter. Lots of unburned powder kernals until I applied a heavy crimp. It's my main 45-70 load now. WC860 is even slower than 4831.
